Four Easy Ways to Keep Your Food Fresh

We all know that fresh food is packed with nutrients. And it’s not always possible to enjoy that juicy piece of fruit the moment it’s picked from the tree. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t get the most out of everything you eat. Here are some quick tips to make sure that you’re able to preserve the valuable nutritional value of your food.

When it’s Edible, the Skin Is In

Don’t peel your produce. Edible skins of fruits and vegetables, like apples, pears, potatoes and cucumbers, are rich in nutrients such as fiber. So put that peeler away, thoroughly wash those fresh fruits and veggies, and enjoy skin and all. Remember keep it safe and always rinse your produce under clean running water, before preparing or eating them.

Keep Your Cool

If you can’t get it fresh, frozen is the next best thing. Frozen foods are quickly chilled in a way that preserves the vitamins and natural antioxidants found in freshly picked fruits and vegetables. Keep a supply of dried and canned fruits and vegetables on hand too so that you can readily incorporate them into your recipes. Look for canned fruits packed in water or 100% juice and canned veggies with no salt added.

Bye-Bye Boiling

Boiling can leach out some nutrients very quickly. Steam or roast your veggies for a quick and vitamin-packed snack or side dish!

Drink It Up

Sure, cold pressed juice is as refreshing as it is tasty. But there’s more to the drink than that. Freshly pressed juice is an easy way to get many of the nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables on the go. Be sure to eat most of your fruits whole or cut up for the fiber content.
